Japan Region and Administrative Area

Japan is a stratovolcanic archipelago consist of 6.852 islands. The four largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which make up about 97 % of Japan's land area, and there is 16 artificial island that made for special purpose. Those are :

·         Dejima in Nagasaki (Historic)
·         Dream Island (Yume No Shima)
·         Islands for Tokyo Disneyland in Urayasu
·         Islands for Haneda International Airport runway expansion.
·         Heiwa Island, Tokyo Bay

·         Kisarazu Island for Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line
·         Kobe Airport
·         New Kitakyushu Airport
·         Nagasaki Airport
·         Odaiba, Tōkyō Bay
·         The Second Sea Fortress, Tōkyō Bay

Japan has prefecture (Todōfuken) system in which there are 47 Prefecture. Tokyo become the capital of government in japan, referred as To (Tokyo Metropolitan Government), Hokkaido is the largest prefecture with 83.452 Km2  (22 % of Japan's land area) referred as Dō.  Osaka and Kyoto is two of important city since the Meiji Era and so referred as Fu. And there is another 43 prefecture that develop as rural area and referred as Ken.
Beside the administrative area system, there is 8 region in japan. The region of japan are not official administrative units, but have been traditionally used as the regional division of Japan in a number of contexts. For instance, maps and geography textbooks divide Japan into the eight regions, weather reports usually give the weather by region, and many businesses and institutions use their home region as part of their name
